Woonki Sung joined Darby in 2005 to assist Darby with the firm's objective of sponsoring, structuring and raising a proposed Darby Korea Infrastructure Fund ("KEIF") in partnership with Hana Financial Group. Since 2006, Mr. Sung has been the Representative Director of the Darby Hana joint venture infrastructure fund operation, which manages 13 infrastructure funds of a cumulative AUM of about USD 1.7 billion.
Prior to joining Darby, Mr. Sung was the Chairman of the Board of Directors and President, CEO of Korea Infrastructure Fund Management Company, a joint venture management company that managed Korea Infrastructure Fund ("KIF"), the first infrastructure fund of Korea. KIF co-invested with CDP KTIF, an offshore private equity fund established by Caisse de depot et placement ("CDP"), a Canadian pension fund manager. Prior to his return to Korea in 1999, Dr. Sung worked over 20 years at IFC and the World Bank in Washington, D.C. During his tenure at IFC, he assumed various managerial positions the last of which was to head the Special Operations Department that specialized in corporate restructuring operations on a global basis.
Mr. Sung began his career as a Deputy Director of the Banking Bureau at the Ministry of Finance, Korea. He was an adjunct professor of international finance and investment courses at the Korea University Business School and George Washington Graduate School of Business in Washington. He holds a PhD in international finance from the University of Michigan, an MBA from Harvard Business School, the CFA designation, and is also an attorney-at-law in California. Mr. Sung is fluent in Korean and English and has an advanced level of proficiency in Chinese (Mandarin).
